Apprentice Scoops Prize
One of our young bakers
has recently been rewarded for his efforts in a national bakery
competition. Ross Cameron took 2nd prize in the inaugural
James Allan Memorial Competition held recently at the Scottish
Association of Master Baker's training centre at Larbert.
A total of six finalists
did battle in the bakery and had to produce either a loaf
of bread or four rolls and also a sweet product such as fondant
fancies or fresh cream cakes. Ross chose to make four morning
rolls and also four fondant fancies. The judges were impressed
with the overall standard of the products presented to them.
The fondant fancies produced by Ross came in for particular
praise as being innovative and well crafted confections.
Although he missed
out on the 1st prize by a mere three points, he was pleased
to have been involved and delighted to receive his runners-up
shield and cheque for £100. Ross said, “I'm looking
forward to going one step further next year and winning the
competition.”
The James Allan Memorial
Competition was set up to encourage young bakers aged under
22 to enhance their skills by competing for a trophy and prize
money on an annual basis. The son of the late James Allan,
Mr. Hamish Allan, a retired baker from near Glasgow, has donated
a substantial sum of money to allow the competition to be
run in perpetuity.
